Summer might be the busiest time of year on site, but high temperatures bring their own set of problems for plasterers and renderers. Plastering in hot weather means dealing with drying time that speeds up fast, and fast drying is one of the most common causes of cracking, poor adhesion and weak, powdery finishes. With a few adjustments to your approach, and the right beads in place, you can still get a strong, professional finish even in the middle of a heatwave.

Why Hot Weather Causes Problems
Plaster and render cure through a chemical reaction with water, not simply by drying out. In hot conditions, the surface moisture evaporates too quickly for that reaction to complete properly. The result is plaster that looks dry on the outside but hasn’t cured properly underneath, leaving it weak, prone to shrinkage cracks, and a poor base for any subsequent coats.
Direct sunlight and wind make this worse again, pulling moisture out of the mix even faster than heat alone.
Tips for Plastering in Hot Weather
Work the cooler hours. Where possible, plaster in the early morning or late afternoon and avoid applying in direct sunlight. Starting an hour or two earlier can make a real difference to how the material behaves.
Control suction on the substrate. Dampen the background before applying, damp, not wet, so the wall doesn’t pull moisture out of the plaster too quickly. This is especially important on blockwork and brick, which suck moisture aggressively in hot, dry conditions.
Slow the cure with fogging. Light misting of the surface during curing (not immediately after application) can help slow evaporation and reduce the risk of shrinkage cracking, particularly on renders.
Work in smaller sections. In hot weather, plaster stays workable for a shorter window. Reducing the size of each pass or running a test area first helps you judge working time before committing to a full wall.
Don’t rush the second coat. Because surface drying is deceptive in heat, always check the plaster has cured properly, not just dried, before applying a second coat or decoration.n.

Cracking risk in hot weather is exactly why detailing at movement joints needs to be right. A Movement Bead allows the substrate and finish to expand and contract independently, which is critical when render is curing under thermal stress.

The Bottom Line
Heat doesn’t have to mean a compromised finish. Slow the process down where you can (cooler hours, damped substrates, smaller sections) and make sure your beads are doing their job at every joint and corner. Get both right, and hot weather becomes a scheduling challenge rather than a quality one.
